Owego Cross Country Invitational
September 22nd, 2018 - (OWEGO, NY) – Middle and High School Runners found themselves in the starting blocks at Pheasant Hill Country Club at the Owego Cross Country Invitational. Teams from all over the Southern Tier traveled to Owego to race. Binghamton High School, Seton Catholic, and Vestal were teams representing the central Southern Tier, where as Unadilla represented further east while Corning-Painted Post and Elmira traveled from the west. There was representation from Northeast Bradford, a Pennsylvania school. There were several other schools racing.
The race had great weather for running. It was 55 degrees at the start and sunny, and 71 by 2pm. Beautiful weather for cross country racing. The Pheasant Hill Golf Course boasts an impressive and difficult course through the 18 holes. It starts on a gradual uphill and includes other two major hills on mile 1 and mile 2 of the course. Cross country runners ran up over a 20% incline on the hill at mile 2.
Top prizes were given to the top 15 places in Varsity and Junior Varsity races and top 10 in modified Cross Country races. Girls and Boys Varsity and JV runners ran the Pheasant Hill 5k course, modified students ran a 1.65 mile course.

Matthew Francis Gawors is a lifelong endurance athlete. He specialized in the 800m in High School and switched to marathons in college. In 2009, he switched over to competing primarily in Triathlons. His passion and goal is to support the Binghamton community by improving their physical, emotional, and financial health through physical fitness events and tourism. He owns the running special store, Confluence Running, has worked as the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Services for Broome County, and currently is employed by Binghamton University as the Aquatics Director for Health and Wellness Studies.
