August 12th, 2018 - (Town of Maine) - Runners took to the skies yesterday evening at the Sunset Runway 5k. Local runners ran a USA Track and Field Certified 5k Course, certified by Diana Bean & Susan Schultz. Bean & Schultz also ran in the race themselves. The course started and finished near hanger 2 after it winded around the taxiways, runways, hangers, and terminals at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM).
Runners and walkers from the Binghamton community were encouraged to come out and enjoy the festivities. The Sunset Runway's goal was to encourage fitness, wellness, and promote the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM). According to Geoff Herbert's Syracuse.com article "In Binghamton, N.Y., the obesity rate is 37.6 percent, making it the second fattest city in America." Broome County Parks and Recreation's mission is to improve the physical, emotional, and financial health of the community.
Broome County Executive, Jason T. Garnar, lead by example in the race. He finished in a time of 25:44, coming in 49th out of 141 finishers.
In addition to the race, I Heart Media's DJ, Scott Stabbert, provided motivation and entertainment with Top Hits music from all eras. He also lead as the master of ceremonies for the race's awards ceremony.
Binghamton Brewing Company of Johnson City made an appearance and provided each participant with a microbrewery beer (or beverage) after the race. Food was available for purchase in addition to the food provided by the race.
The winner of the Sunset Runway 5k was John Salva. A local runner from Conklin, New York. Salva recently won the Kelly LaBare 5k during the 2018 Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally. Salva is also the defending champion of the Inaugural Sunset Runway 5k at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM). John Salva won the Sunset Runway 5k and completed the USA Track and Field Certified Course in 17:30.
Course chip timing, results, and awards were provided by Gazelle Timing. Gazelle Timing is a local company that works out of the Vestal Coal House in Vestal, New York. Owner Brian Cupp was in attendance.
Portions of the proceeds will go toward the Twin Tiers Honor Flight.
This race was hosted by the Greater Binghamton Airport & the Broome County Department of Aviation and presented by Broome County Park, Recreation, and Youth Services. Co-Race directors included Mark Heefner, Deputy Commissioner of Aviation, Dave Hickling, Commissioner of Aviation, and Matt Gawors, Director of Broome County Parks Recreation, and Youth Services.
